Why Balancing Rocks Studio is Created

Anyone who has the good fortune to learn directly from the Iyengar family (Yogacharya BKS, Geeta and Prashant Iyengar) of Pune, India, would have a story to share. 

Eng Kiat started the practice of yoga in 2000, his first exposure to yoga in the Iyengar tradtion was in 2002 when he did intensive courses with the Chanchani (Rajiv & Swati) in Dehradun, India, for two months. From then on, he returned on a yearly basis to learn from them for 2-3 months on each visit. 

In Jan 2004, he sustained a serious Sacral-Iliac Joint injury from a ski trip. This injury resulted in him unable to squat (due to pain in the SI joint & groin) and many other movements that he was able to perform previously. And he was further injured when some of the yoga classes that he was attending then required him to perform the classical poses 'forcefully'.

Luckily for him, his passion for yoga did not wane, and he was still learning stuff that was able to relieve his problem whenever he goes for training with the Chanchani.

He finally got the chance to experience first hand - the principles, concepts, techniques - of Iyengar Yoga more fully and in-depth during his stay in Pune, India. Eng Kiat not only managed to learn how to deal with his personal issue but was able to acquire the knowledge to deal with many other common issues that arise from modern living.  


Balancing Rocks is a studio born out of the keen-ness of this aspiring yoga practitioner to share his story, his experiences and his knowledge gained from spending 20 months & counting, including an extended stay of 15 months at Pune to learn directly at the feet of the Iyengars, and also the many years of practice with the other senior Iyengar teachers.

The teaching system and methodology of the Iyengar has awed and transformed millions. BKS Iyengar is the only yoga master named by TIME magazine as the 100 most influential person in 2004.

During the extended stay (of 15 months) and subsequent training trips, Eng Kiat was blessed to be guided by the Iyengars, and Pune-based senior teachers to deal with people with varies conditions - breast cancer, back issues, heart ailments, etc. 

His aim for Balancing Rocks is to provide the opportunities for students in Singapore to experience the teachings of Iyengar Yoga (through the experiences of Eng Kiat), even when they have conditions that might have created the 'impression' that they cannot embark on this journey. 

With his extensive exposures to various conditions first-hand, and also the chance to teach students from the age of 11 to the age of 85. From healthy tri-athelete to dying patients (2 cases to-date in Singapore). 

He hope that the Iyengar Yoga tradition can be made accessible to as many as possible.
